It is not for kings, Lemuel—This is considered some of the final instructions from Bathsheba to her son Solomon who became king at a young age of 16. Once he would become king his attitude regarding receiving instructions might change so these instructions are of high priority, and to be considered most valued instruction.
it is not for kings to drink wine,
not for rulers to crave beer,
Apparently there is a distinction between kings, rulers or leaders and everybody else. Everyone else makes decisions for themselves, however a leader needs to rightly be able to make decisions not only for themselves but also on behalf of others welfare. And he needs to be ready in season and out of season.
It brings to mind this area of Scripture:
2 Timothy 2:20-22
20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
With responsibility comes great benefits, but also great sacrifice. In my youth I wontonly drank with indiscretion, now as a leader and pastor I have the benefit of being used by God in ways most people never get close to but with that benefit is responsibility. One of which is to be sober minded so as to be able to guide and direct my household as well as those who God has given me influence over.
APPLICATION
I need to continue to cleanse myself of any residue of evil desires of youth, and practice holiness out of reverence for God and His calling on my life.
